Bophuthatswana Civil Movement calls for termination of all contracts awarded to companies belonging to Suleiman Carrim

PRESS STATEMENT

For immediate release
14 August 2026

The Bophuthatswana Civil Movement (BCM) notes with cautious optimismthe
announcement by the Madlanga Commission that criminal charges will be laid against
Suleiman Carrim, with hope that among those will be “Contravention of the CommissionsAct”. BCM welcomes this development in the hope that it will reinforce the principle that therule of law must prevail and that all persons who seek to evade accountability will be
brought to justice. BCM will continue to monitor this matter closely. We remain hopeful that
the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa will handle the case with the urgency, independence and diligence it deserves, and that the criminal-justice process will proceedwithout fear, favour or political interference. BCM is nevertheless deeply concerned that, while Mr Carrim is playing hide and seek withthe law, companies associated with him allegedly continue to benefit fromgovernment
contracts. In our view, this raises serious questions about the protection of public financesin both the provincial and local spheres of government in the North West Province. TheBophuthatswana Civil Movement further maintains that the evidence and testimony
emerging from the Madlanga Commission require urgent and transparent scrutiny of public- procurement processes across the province. BCM is particularly concerned by what it
describes as the alleged political capture of the provincial administration and the
concentration of high-value tenders awarded to companies linked to Mr Carrim.
BCM therefore calls for the immediate suspension and lawful review of all tenders andcontracts awarded to companies belonging to or associated with Mr Carrim. Where
investigations establish corruption, irregularity, conflicts of interest or non-compliancewithprocurement legislation, such contracts must be terminated with immediate effect. Government must also ensure appropriate disclosure of contract information, protect publicfunds and safeguard the uninterrupted delivery of essential services. BCM strongly encourage members of the public to follow developments arising fromtheCommission and any related investigations. An informed public is better positioned toassess the conduct of political parties and public representatives and to make well-informedelectoral decisions ahead of the 4 November 2026 Local Government Elections. Bophuthatswana Civil Movement remains committed to reversing a grave mistakes of 1994and to advancing a government of the people, by the people and for the people. We will
continue to advocate for transparent, accountable and responsive governance that placesthe interests of communities above political connections and private enrichment.
